Maritime Mental Health Awareness Training©

By the time shoreside became aware, Captain Morzu had not been functioning effectively for several days, he had been struggling to keep up with bridge operations, falling asleep at his desk trying to catch up with paperwork and he was missing meals.

The first concern raised with shoreside came from the ship's agent, who had been repeatedly chasing information required ahead of the vessel's next port call.

The bridge team knew something wasn’t right, but didn’t know what to do.

It's often those on board that are in the best position to notice and take action, but they may worry that they’ll make things worse, or perhaps they just don’t know how to approach a conversation or what action they should take.

Seafarer’s themselves are often concerned about the consequences of asking for help. They worry they will be repatriated, they worry they will lose their job, they worry they won’t be considered for promotion in the future. When your livelihood is at stake, asking for help can feel risky and so you try to cope, you keep it to yourself.

Our Maritime Mental Health Awareness course (MMHA©) is designed with exactly these issues in mind, to build the practical skills and confidence required to provide an appropriate first response on board.

Aimed at those with responsibility for others on board, and those ashore who may need to provide assistance, MMHA© builds awareness of the early signs that someone may be struggling and teaches vital first-response skills.

MMHA© is highly interactive, combining realistic maritime scenarios, live skills practice and peer learning.

Designed and delivered by a Consultant Clinical Psychologist with specialist maritime expertise, the focus is on developing the practical skills participants need to respond confidently and appropriately in real situations.
